On November 24, 2025, at the closing ceremony of the 2nd Conference on Distributed Optical Fiber Sensing Technology and Applications, Professor Zhang Jianzhong, Director of the Key Laboratory of Fiber Integrated Optics of the Ministry of Education at Harbin Engineering University (HEU), formally accepted the baton from Professor Guan Bai’ou, Chair of the 2nd Conference, confirming that HEU will host the 3rd Conference on Distributed Optical Fiber Sensing Technology and Applications (DOFS2026).

Distributed optical fiber sensing technology represents a revolutionary breakthrough in modern sensing. By transforming optical fibers into "sensory nerves," it overcomes the limitations of traditional single-point measurements, covers full-field information with its distributed nature, and achieves high-precision, long-distance real-time monitoring of physical quantities such as temperature, strain, and vibration. It plays a pivotal role in the health monitoring of critical infrastructure in energy, transportation, marine, and smart city applications and has become a strategic technology direction in international competition. Since its launch in 2024, the Conference on Distributed Optical Fiber Sensing Technology and Applications has drawn widespread attention from universities, research institutes, and enterprises, with cumulative attendance exceeding 1,000 participants. Professor Zhang Jianzhong has served as the Chair of the "Applications of Distributed Optical Fiber Sensing in Marine Monitoring" topical session for two consecutive editions. In his frontier lecture titled "Distributed Fiber Optic Hydrophones," he reviewed the development of fiber optic hydrophones, highlighted technologies related to distributed fiber optic hydrophones, and discussed the challenges in their development and engineering applications.

Hosting the 3rd Conference on Distributed Optical Fiber Sensing Technology and Applications marks another breakthrough for HEU in optical engineering discipline development and technology transfer. It will further deepen the university's cooperation with top-tier research institutions and enterprises worldwide, promote the integrated innovation of integrated sensing and communication technologies and artificial intelligence, accelerate the transition of technology from the "laboratory" to the "production line," and empower technological upgrading in regional economic development and national security. Professor Zhang Jianzhong remarked, "Hosting this conference is both an honor and a responsibility. Guided by technological needs, we will build an innovation ecosystem that deeply integrates industry, academia, and research, and contribute HEU's wisdom to the large-scale application of distributed optical fiber sensing technology."
