The Key Laboratory of Photonic Materials and Device Physics for Oceanic Applications, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China is dedicated to the development of ocean photonic devices and technologies, ship stealth materials and applications, and infrared laser materials and physics. At present, our laboratory has the right to confer the doctoral degree in the first-level discipline of "Optical Engineering", and has an "Optical Engineering" post-doctoral scientific research station, which is a key discipline in Heilongjiang Province.

Focusing on frontier scientific issues and aiming at major national needs, our laboratory develops basic theories and methods, key technologies and applications of ocean photonic devices and technologies, ship stealth materials and applications, and infrared laser materials and physics. At present, a high-level academic team with significant influence at domestic and international has been formed, producing a series of original scientific and technological innovation results. We have also established close and in-depth cooperation with international top research institutions such as the School of Engineering of the University of Tokyo, Japan, the Optoelectronics Research Centre of the University of Southampton, UK, the Fiber Optic Technology Center of the University of New South Wales, Australia, and the University of Ottawa, Canada, and so on.

In recent years, our laboratory has undertaken more than 110 national, provincial, and ministerial projects (including 49 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China) such as key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, special projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology for the Development of National Major Instruments, and major projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology for International Cooperation, and the scientific research funds totaled more than ¥99 million. Meanwhile, our laboratory has won more than 10 provincial and ministerial awards, including 2 second-class awards for technological inventions from the Ministry of Education, 1 first-class award for technological progress in Heilongjiang Province, 1 first-class award for natural sciences, and 4 second-class awards for natural sciences in Heilongjiang Province.

The laboratory adheres to the requirement of " Scientific and technological development must target the global sci-tech frontiers, Serve the main economic battlefields, Strive to fulfill the significant needs of the country and Benefit people's lives and health", serves the national development strategy of a " Strong Maritime Country", relies on the " Shipbuilding industry, Naval equipment, Ocean development, and Nuclear energy applications " advantageous schooling characteristics of Harbin Engineering University, solves the key optical technology in related engineering technology fields, provides support for China's marine information equipment technology, and promotes the development of industrialization and informatization in the fields of ship engineering, ocean sensing and detection, and ocean development, etc. The laboratory aims to carry out the cross and integration of disciplines based on the physics of ocean photonic materials and devices, to build a disciplinary research system featuring the physics of photonic materials and devices, to carry forward the advantages of disciplines, and to strengthen the professional characteristics, to promote the application of advanced photonic materials in the field of ship and ocean engineering. In the next 10 years, we will strive to build a first-class key laboratory in China and a leading one in some fields, and become an important talent training base in the directions of ocean photonic devices and technology, ship stealth materials and applications, and infrared laser materials and physics.
