As one of the development frontiers and hotspots in the field of photonics, integrated photonics and its related technologies are regarded as the necessary path and advanced stage from photonics development to the photonics industry. Their development is the cornerstone of the development of informatization in human society. Based on the research of micro-structured optical fiber, fiber-integrated passive/active devices, and miniature fiber sensors, the Key Laboratory of In-Fiber Integrated Optics, Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China has proposed a new concept and idea of "Fiber-Integrated Optics", and developed its supporting key technologies. The core idea of fiber-integrated optics is to integrate complex optical circuits and various optical components into a single optical fiber, and a series of new, miniature, special components, devices, and systems can be formed through fiber-integrated optics methods and technologies.
As a new branch of integrated photonics, fiber-integrated optics involves the basic theories and key technologies related to optoelectronics and photonics. The purpose of developing the basic theory of fiber-integrated optics and its key technologies is to obtain fiber-integrated optical circuits with different functions and degrees of integration, to realize the integration and miniaturization of photonic information transmission, sensing, and processing systems, as well as photonic micro-dynamic manipulation.
There are 44 researchers in the laboratory, including 17 professors, 12 associate professors, and 15 lecturers. In the past five years (2018-2022), 253 invention patents have been authorized, 299 invention patents have been applied for, and 683 scientific papers have been indexed in SCI and 674 in EI. Our laboratory has undertaken a total of 206 projects at the national, provincial, and ministerial levels, with a total of ¥109.02 million in scientific research funding, and ¥81.92 million in scientific research funding has been paid. Among them, there are 3 Key R&D projects, 18 National Defense Assembly projects, 42 National Natural Science Foundation of China projects, 28 Provincial and Ministerial projects, 47 Lateral projects, and 26 Patent Transformation projects. In the past five years, our laboratory has won 9 provincial and ministerial awards, including 2 first-class prizes for Science and Technology of Heilongjiang Province (nature category) and 2 second-class prizes.
The scientific research objectives of our laboratory are: to build a new branch of fiber-integrated optics, to develop the theory, methods and key technologies related to fiber-integrated optics, and to explore new methods and approaches for passive/active and mixed-mode all-photonics integration research; to develop the basic theory, methods and key technologies of refractive index-guided micro-structured fiber optics; to develop fiber-integrated optics devices, systems, and their applications, and provide new methods for miniature, special devices for information acquisition, transmission, and processing; to develop fiber-integrated photonic micro-dynamics, to provide new principles and methods for photonic micro-manipulation and its applications; and ultimately to form a series of landmark innovations so that the overall research level of the laboratory will reach the domestic leading and international advanced level.
